BARDA

Tyler Merkeley MS, MBA lead the US Government’s effort to establish both the Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Accelerator (CARB-X) and the Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures (DRIVe) at the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). He led the design, launch and oversight of these two novel programs to revitalize the antibacterial pipeline and transform health security.

Tyler’s expertise is in building and leading novel public private partnerships to enhance national security. Tyler joined BARDA in 2009 as a Health Scientist to accelerate the advanced research and development and stockpile of medical countermeasures (MCM) against biological, chemical, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents under Project BioShield.  During his tenure at BARDA he has led the smallpox antiviral procurement, served as the BARDA program manager for CARB-X and most recently supported the design and launch of BARDA’s newest Division, DRIVe where he served as the Interim Director. The DRIVe & CARB-X Initiatives earned Tyler the 2018 HHS Secretary Award for Excellence in Management for the development of novel business models to enhance national security.
