The coronavirus pandemic was a wake-up call for those inclined to ignore emerging health threats. Looking to the future, whether it be another virus, mental health, or noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes and dementia, the US must consider its options to avoid or at least minimize the impact of health threats with the potential to cause even more pain if ignored.

• How can stakeholders work together to prepare for epidemics and pandemics of the future?
• What can be done to support health systems in handling the rise of chronic conditions such as obesity and dementia?
• What advances are we seeing in treatment of increasingly prevalent conditions such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes and cancer?
• As recognition and understanding of mental health evolves, how could treatments change?
