SUMMARY:ICARe Interdisciplinary Course on Antibiotics and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:The emergence and spread of bacteria resistant to many drug classes seriously threaten all branches of modern medicine. There is currently no course providing advanced instruction on antibiotics and resistance. The specific goal of ICARe is to bring leaders in academics and industry together with trained scientists at the dawn of their careers. Cutting-edge approaches for the study of resistance and antibiotic discovery will be examined. \nThe objective of ICARe is to train the next generation of scientists implicated in the study of bacterial resistance to antibiotics and the finding of new drugs.  ICARe is designed for assistant professors\, new industry scientists\, ID fellows\, and postdoctoral research associates\, as well as members from developing areas contending with the challenge of managing antibiotic resistance with limited resources. Attendance will be limited to 40 students and will reflect the global nature of the problem. \nClick here to learn more.\nClick here to view an overview of the programme.

SUMMARY:CARB-X WEBINAR: European Celebration of 5 Years of Progress with CARB-X
DESCRIPTION:European Celebration of 5 Years of Progress with CARB-X \nA virtual discussion of progress and plans to accelerate innovation globally \n22nd of October\, 2021\, 3:30 – 4:30pm CET / 9:30 – 10:30am ET \nAntibiotic-resistance undermines the safety net for modern medicine. Chemotherapy\, surgeries\, transplantation\, childbirth – all of these and more depend on antibiotics to treat infection.  At least 700\,000 people die each year due to antibiotic-resistant (AMR) infections\, according to a recent WHO report. A recent Lancet publication from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) estimates that approximately 33\,000 deaths in the EU each year can be attributed to AMR\, and an Organization of Economic Cooperation & Development OECD report calculates about 1.1 billion Euros are required for the health care systems of EU/EEA countries to address AMR. \nCARB-X and its partners are taking action. CARB-X has funded 92 projects in 12 countries totaling more than $360 million since it launched in 2016. In Europe\, the support of Wellcome Trust\, the German Ministry of Health and Education\, and the UK Global AMR Innovation Fund was critical to this progress over the past five years. \nToday\, the CARB-X portfolio is the world’s largest and most scientifically diverse antibacterial R&D portfolio. We are currently accelerating projects focused on the most serious antibiotic-resistant bacteria\, including new classes of antibiotics and non-traditional agents\, vaccines and other preventatives such as CRISPR-phage\, microbiome-modifying agents and antibodies\, and rapid diagnostics. \nPlease join us for a virtual discussion of the critical role that CARB-X and its global partners play in driving the development of innovative products to address the antibiotic-resistant bacteria health crisis. \nCARB-X Executive Director Kevin Outterson will highlight achievements\, especially in Europe and speak to CARB-X’s future vision and strategy. \nEuropean-based funders of CARB-X will outline their objectives and strategy in preparedness and how CARB-X delivery over 2016-2021 has met some of these goals. \nSeveral European product developers in the current CARB-X portfolio will speak about their innovative products and their experience working with CARB-X. \nA panel of experts will discuss antibiotics as the safety net for modern medicine and the challenges of bringing innovative products to patients in Europe. \n\nVeronika von Messling – Director-General for Life Sciences at the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (confirmed)\nFlorence Séjourné – Chief Executive Director of Da Volterra and President of BEAM Alliance (confirmed)\nSir Jeremy Farrar – Director of Wellcome Trust & Member of the One Health Global Leaders Group on AMR (confirmed)\n Otto Cars – Founding Director of ReAct\, Senior Professor\, Infectious Diseases\, Uppsala University\, and former member of UN Inter-Agency Coordination Group on AMR (confirmed)\n\nClick here to register\, and to find out more about this important virtual meeting.

SUMMARY:EFPIA - Pandemic Prevention: how Europe can lead the fight against AMR
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join this virtual event on Tuesday\, 16 November\, 2021 at 14:00 – 15:30 CET. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic took the world by surprise. An AMR induced pandemic will not.\nThe World Bank estimates that 10 million people per year could die if new antimicrobials are not found. Without effective prevention and treatment of infections\, medical procedures such as organ transplantation\, cancer chemotherapy\, and major surgery will become too dangerous to perform. In the Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe\, the European Commission declared that “new business models are required” if we are to meet this challenge and succeed\, spotlighting 2022 as the year when change needs to happen.\n\nJoin us to discuss how we can drive investment in antimicrobials R&D and set out a roadmap to a sustainable innovation ecosystem that will safeguard society against the threat of AMR.\n  \nCARB-X participants include Kevin Outterson\, Executive Director. \nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Global Vaccine and Immunization Research Forum
DESCRIPTION:Topic:\nVaccines as Tools to Prevent Antimicrobial Resistance: Advances\, Challenges and Future Development \nPurpose:\nAntimicrobial resistance caused 4.95 million deaths associated with AMR and 1.27 million deaths attributable to AMR in 2019. Vaccines can prevent a proportion of the AMR burden by preventing drug-sensitive and drug-resistant infections\, reducing antibiotic use and reducing pathogen transmission and chances of developing resistance genes. Increasing evidence from observational and modelling studies show the impact of vaccines on AMR. \nHowever\, this evidence is yet to translate to policy and decision making about which vaccines to develop and introduce\, so they effectively prevent AMR. This webinar will explore the mechanisms\, evidence and value of vaccines in preventing AMR. A panel of experts will discuss the challenges to ensure that vaccines to prevent AMR are developed and widely used. \nRegistration:\nhttps://who.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Iudu_2LtRIqv6hA6IkCkBQ \nAudience\nScientists\, product developers\, regulators\, policy makers\, implementers and funders interested in the role of vaccines in preventing AMR. \nTopics \n\nThe threat of AMR and ways through which vaccines can prevent it;\nAssessment of the value of vaccines in preventing AMR;\nResearch priorities on vaccines and AMR;\nDevelopment pipeline for vaccines against AMR priority pathogens;\nThe role of vaccines in National Action Plans on AMR;\nStories from the field: how vaccines were used in Zimbabwe to prevent AMR;\nChallenges and opportunities to ensure that vaccines against AMR are developed and used.\n\nAbout GVIRF\nThe Global Vaccine and Immunization Research Forum\, the central forum for research related to Immunization Agenda 2030\, brings together the entire vaccine and immunization research community every two years and is organized by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases\, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, and the World Health Organization. Between biennial meetings\, a series of webinars is also organized to address emerging issues of interest.
