SUMMARY:2023 UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE (UHC) IN AN ERA OF ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE (AMR) AND PANDEMICS CONFERENCE
DESCRIPTION:Built upon the outcomes of the 2018 High-level Meeting spearheaded by ASEF\, the high-level conference on “Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in an Era of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Pandemics” is co-organised by Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF)\, AMR Clinical Reference Center and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The conference will take place on 21-22 February 2023 in Tokyo\, Japan.   \nThe overall aim of this conference is to facilitate a much-needed dialogue between governments and other stakeholders on practical ways to integrate a concern for AMR into UHC. Unlike short-term measures and funding schemes\, health systems are here to stay. Accordingly\, the conference will discuss sustainable actions on AMR using the health system approach. Actionable AMR strategies that address the need to support high quality science and provide incentives to develop and produce new antimicrobials will also be considered. The conference will explore the links between mitigating AMR under UHC and pandemic preparedness. Last but not least\, possible international collaborations and effective coordination mechanisms will also be sought\, as AMR cannot be solved by a single country on its own.  \nThe conference will bring together senior-level health officials who are working in the areas of UHC\, AMR\, and Pandemic Preparedness and Response (PPR). The conference will feature presentations and panel discussions on topical subjects\, such as about innovative ideas on R&D and commercialisation of antimicrobials for sustainability\, as well as group discussions on priorities for international cooperation between Asia and Europe to support progress towards sustainable UHC while containing risks of emerging infectious diseases\, including AMR.  \nTo learn more about the conference background\, its audience\, partners\, and other details\, please click here. \nThis high-level conference is an invitation-only event.

SUMMARY:9th Nikkei FT Communicable Diseases Conference
DESCRIPTION:The outbreak of COVID-19 has not only revealed Japan’s lag in such areas including R&D of domestic vaccines and medicines\, digitalization of its medical systems\, and crisis management system itself\, but also revealed the vulnerability in the global health system. Developing countries are also confronted with infection controls\, which results in virus mutation and spread malaria\, tuberculosis\, and many other emerging and re-emerging communicable diseases. \nNikkei Inc. has been organizing the annual Nikkei FT Communicable Diseases Conference since 2014\, gathering internationally renowned experts in the field; representatives of the private sector\, academia and high-ranking government officials responsible for health\, both within and outside Japan. \nThe 9th Conference is to be held on 15th -16th November\, discussing how the global health communities should fight against communicable diseases\, and how Japan can maximize its contribution. Through Nikkei group’s diverse media network\, the concrete and practical action plans that had been proposed from the conference will be disseminated globally.

As all of us are aware\, the COVID-19 outbreak continues to pose serious transmission risks for all face-to-face interactions\, particularly with large international events like this symposium. In addition to the transmission risk\, navigating changing regulations with regards to international travel and gatherings is quite daunting to all. Given the risks and uncertainty\, I hope that you will understand the reasoning for the cancellation. \nHowever\, I am pleased to inform you that we will be hosting a new H3D symposium from 25th-28th Oct 2022 at the same venue\, Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch outside of Cape Town\, South Africa. We hope you will consider joining us then. \nWelcome from Kelly Chibale\, Chair of the 2020 H3D Symposium Committee:\nI would like to extend an invitation to you to attend the 2021 Symposium hosted by the Drug Discovery & Development Centre (H3D). This will be the 4th H3D Symposium to be held in Africa (the 3rd in the Western Cape) and is a very special Symposium as it marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of H3D. Thus\, the theme of this special H3D symposium was derived as ‘Celebrating a Decade of Infectious Diseases Drug Discovery and Development’. The Symposium will cover the Centre’s research over 10 years conducted on Malaria\, Tuberculosis (TB)\, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and drug resistant infections of bacterial origin towards combating AntiMicrobial Resistance (AMR). \nThe Symposium takes place in true Cape style at the Spier Hotel\, surrounded by leafy vineyards and beautiful mountain scenery and situated on the outskirts of the historic and picturesque old town of Stellenbosch. The organizing committee is currently encouraging participation in the symposium by drug discovery scientists from Africa\, as well from all over the globe\, who are working on the discovery of drugs to combat TB\, Malaria\, AMR and a host of NTDs. Through this symposium\, we aim to ensure that all these highly infectious\, deleterious diseases that primarily affect the African population\, will receive worldwide attention in both scientific and non-scientific arenas. \nI urge you to consider participating and making the most of this opportunity. Besides networking with the other delegates\, there will be wonderful scenery to admire and activities to enjoy. I hope that participation in this symposium will inspire your further research for the next decade! \nCARB-X participants include Erin Duffy\, Chief of R&D. \nClick here to learn more.\nClick here to view the agenda.\nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Accelerating the Development and Uptake of Rapid Diagnostics to Address Antibiotic Resistance - A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On October 13-14\, 2022\, the Forum on Drug Discovery\, Development\, and Translation\, the Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies\, and the Forum on Microbial Threats will host a public workshop for stakeholders to discuss the current landscape of rapid point-of-care diagnostics to address antibiotic resistance\, consider challenges and opportunities for spurring innovation\, and discuss practical next steps for accelerating the development of new diagnostic tools. \nBackground\nThe use and misuse of antibiotics contributes to the rise in drug-resistant bacteria – a serious and worsening threat to human health. Addressing the problem of antibiotic resistance requires measures to spur innovation and ensure the prudent use of existing drugs. Rapid point-of-care diagnostics can play an important role in avoiding unnecessary use of antimicrobials by providing clinicians with the right information at the right time to help them make decisions about appropriate drug treatment for patients. Diagnostics also have the capacity to support early detection and diagnosis of drug-resistant bacterial infections\, enable disease surveillance\, and help prevent disease spread. \nThe public workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions to: \n\nExamine the current state of rapid diagnostic development\, including examples of successes and limitations of current approaches.\nConsider the unique challenges for the development and use/uptake of rapid diagnostics in health care settings (e.g.\, feasibility of clinical utility studies)\nConsider gaps that rapid diagnostics may be best-suited to address (e.g. tools to support targeted treatment decisions in the healthcare setting\, tools to enable real-time surveillance based on routine hospital data).\nDiscuss practical short- and long-term opportunities for spurring the development of new diagnostics that can help address antibiotic resistance.\n\nPlanning Committee\nKent E. Kester (co-chair)\, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative \nBetsy Wonderly Trainor (co-chair)\, CARB-X \nJohn Billington\, GSK \nCarey-Ann Burnham\, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis \nPaul Eder\, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases\, NIH \nDeborah Hung\, Harvard Medical School \nAmanda Jezek\, Infectious Diseases Society of America \nRobin Patel\, Mayo Clinic \nRibhi Shawar\, Center for Devices and Radiological Health\, FDA \nSusan Van Meter\, The American Clinical Laboratory Association
