SUMMARY:Global Vaccine and Immunization Research Forum
DESCRIPTION:Topic:\nVaccines as Tools to Prevent Antimicrobial Resistance: Advances\, Challenges and Future Development \nPurpose:\nAntimicrobial resistance caused 4.95 million deaths associated with AMR and 1.27 million deaths attributable to AMR in 2019. Vaccines can prevent a proportion of the AMR burden by preventing drug-sensitive and drug-resistant infections\, reducing antibiotic use and reducing pathogen transmission and chances of developing resistance genes. Increasing evidence from observational and modelling studies show the impact of vaccines on AMR. \nHowever\, this evidence is yet to translate to policy and decision making about which vaccines to develop and introduce\, so they effectively prevent AMR. This webinar will explore the mechanisms\, evidence and value of vaccines in preventing AMR. A panel of experts will discuss the challenges to ensure that vaccines to prevent AMR are developed and widely used. \nRegistration:\nhttps://who.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Iudu_2LtRIqv6hA6IkCkBQ \nAudience\nScientists\, product developers\, regulators\, policy makers\, implementers and funders interested in the role of vaccines in preventing AMR. \nTopics \n\nThe threat of AMR and ways through which vaccines can prevent it;\nAssessment of the value of vaccines in preventing AMR;\nResearch priorities on vaccines and AMR;\nDevelopment pipeline for vaccines against AMR priority pathogens;\nThe role of vaccines in National Action Plans on AMR;\nStories from the field: how vaccines were used in Zimbabwe to prevent AMR;\nChallenges and opportunities to ensure that vaccines against AMR are developed and used.\n\nAbout GVIRF\nThe Global Vaccine and Immunization Research Forum\, the central forum for research related to Immunization Agenda 2030\, brings together the entire vaccine and immunization research community every two years and is organized by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases\, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation\, and the World Health Organization. Between biennial meetings\, a series of webinars is also organized to address emerging issues of interest.

SUMMARY:A Grand Bargain for Antimicrobial Procurement: Leveraging Purchasing Systems to Address AMR
DESCRIPTION:Join the Center for Global Development for a conversation on new purchasing systems for antimicrobials and the grand bargain stakeholders must strike to govern the global market. This discussion will draw from a new landscape review of antibiotic procurement systems\, which synthesized existing research and thinking on how antimicrobials are procured and ways to improve the current purchasing system. This research was undertaken as part of CGD’s working group\, A Grand Bargain for Antimicrobial Procurement. SUMMARY:The Broken Pipeline of Antibiotics and Ongoing Efforts to Fix It
DESCRIPTION:This webinar has been prepared in collaboration with CARB-X\, a global non-profit partnership accelerating antibacterial products to address drug-resistant bacteria\, a leading cause of death around the world. \nThe webinar is part of the AMR Ambassadors Program open webinars and aims at educating us about the complex process behind antibiotic/diagnostics research\, development and approval\, challenges associated with it\, and the negative implications. This will help us value the antibiotics already approved for use\, and hopefully encourage us to educate others to appreciate these antibiotics\, and actively take part in their conversation. \nWe will be inspired to support ongoing efforts\, develop creative interventions in our own small ways\, and hopefully trigger the interest of tertiary level students and early career professionals to pursue a further education or a career in drug discovery\, and development. \nDr. Erin Duffy will be the keynote speaker for this webinar.

SUMMARY:AMR: Science\, Society\, Commercialization and Policy
DESCRIPTION:The solution to the AMR problem lies as much with disciplines outside of biomedicine as within it. Thus\, a major goal of the AMR Task Force is to engage and connect those working outside the biomedical sciences\, with those working within it. With strong Business and Engineering schools\, thriving Social Science and Humanities Faculties\, and renowned Science and Health Science Faculties\, we are eager to build on McMaster’s strong history of interdisciplinary collaboration\, and catalyze university-wide AMR research under the auspices of Global Nexus. \nThis one-day symposium aims to promote action within the McMaster community around themes including scientific\, economic and societal issues related to AMR. The day will include a morning symposium where internationally acclaimed thought leaders will speak broadly to these themes\, followed by afternoon workshops focused on brainstorming opportunities and hurdles associated with addressing key issues\, and ideas for future conversations and collaborations. \nSpeakers include Ayush Kumar\, a professor of microbiology at the University of Manitoba; Christine Årdal\, a senior advisor at the Institute of Public Health in Norway; Kevin Outterson\, a professor of law at Boston University and the executive director of CARB-X; and Muhammad H. Zaman\, a professor of biomedical engineering at Boston University.

SUMMARY:Accelerating the Development and Uptake of Rapid Diagnostics to Address Antibiotic Resistance - A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On October 13-14\, 2022\, the Forum on Drug Discovery\, Development\, and Translation\, the Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies\, and the Forum on Microbial Threats will host a public workshop for stakeholders to discuss the current landscape of rapid point-of-care diagnostics to address antibiotic resistance\, consider challenges and opportunities for spurring innovation\, and discuss practical next steps for accelerating the development of new diagnostic tools. \nBackground\nThe use and misuse of antibiotics contributes to the rise in drug-resistant bacteria – a serious and worsening threat to human health. Addressing the problem of antibiotic resistance requires measures to spur innovation and ensure the prudent use of existing drugs. Rapid point-of-care diagnostics can play an important role in avoiding unnecessary use of antimicrobials by providing clinicians with the right information at the right time to help them make decisions about appropriate drug treatment for patients. Diagnostics also have the capacity to support early detection and diagnosis of drug-resistant bacterial infections\, enable disease surveillance\, and help prevent disease spread. \nThe public workshop will feature invited presentations and discussions to: \n\nExamine the current state of rapid diagnostic development\, including examples of successes and limitations of current approaches.\nConsider the unique challenges for the development and use/uptake of rapid diagnostics in health care settings (e.g.\, feasibility of clinical utility studies)\nConsider gaps that rapid diagnostics may be best-suited to address (e.g. tools to support targeted treatment decisions in the healthcare setting\, tools to enable real-time surveillance based on routine hospital data).\nDiscuss practical short- and long-term opportunities for spurring the development of new diagnostics that can help address antibiotic resistance.\n\nPlanning Committee\nKent E. Kester (co-chair)\, International AIDS Vaccine Initiative \nBetsy Wonderly Trainor (co-chair)\, CARB-X \nJohn Billington\, GSK \nCarey-Ann Burnham\, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis \nPaul Eder\, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases\, NIH \nDeborah Hung\, Harvard Medical School \nAmanda Jezek\, Infectious Diseases Society of America \nRobin Patel\, Mayo Clinic \nRibhi Shawar\, Center for Devices and Radiological Health\, FDA \nSusan Van Meter\, The American Clinical Laboratory Association
