SUMMARY:Webinar - NIAID Resources to Facilitate Discovery & Development of Anti-Infectives
DESCRIPTION:Speakers include Ann Eakin\, Senior Scientific Officer Office of Biodefense\, Research Resources & Translational Research\, DMID/NIAID/NIH\, member of the CARB-X Joint Oversight Committee. \nIn this presentation\, Ann Eakin (US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases\, NIAID) will provide an overview of the various mechanisms of support offered by NIAID to facilitate the discovery and development of drugs\, vaccines and diagnostics targeting infectious diseases. The types of support that will be discussed are grants and contracts\, as well as preclinical and clinical research services that aim to reduce risk and advance product development efforts. Researchers from any country and from any type of institution (academia\, industry\, non-profit) are eligible to apply for nearly all types of support mechanisms offered by NIAID\, irrespective of prior or current NIH funding. \nAnn’s presentation will be complemented by a short presentation of Dan Pevear\, Founder and Senior Vice President\, Biology and Grants Development\, VenatoRx Pharmaceuticals\, in which he will share VenatoRx’ experience with NIAID support mechanisms. \nThe presentations will be followed by a Q&A session. \n

SUMMARY:Longitude Prize AMR Diagnostics Boston Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Speakers include Kevin Outterson\, CARB-X Executive Director. \nThe Longitude Prize is an international challenge prize competition that will ultimately select one point-of-care diagnostic product to receive a grand payout of 8 million British Pounds ($9.1 million). The winner will have proven that their test can significantly reduce misuse or overuse of antibiotics by creating an affordable\, accurate and rapid point-of-care diagnostic test. This test must be practical to use in the North America and Europe as well as low and middle-income countries (LMICs).  There are currently 83 teams competing for the Prize from 14 countries with a broad mix of entries from industry and academia. The Prize Rules can be found here. \nThe purpose of this workshop is to give existing competitors and those interested in competing more information regarding the Longitude Prize competition to help steer projects toward a winning configuration\, hear from experts on test needs in the United Kingdom (National Health Service) and lower and middle-income contexts (LMICs)\, and to provide a chance for test developers to engage with Longitude judges and the Nesta Team. \nThe Longitude Prize is hosted and managed by the Challenge Prize Centre at Nesta\, the Innovation Foundation based in London. \nPlease RSVP to Ruth Neale at ruth.neale@nesta.org.uk by Friday March 8\, 2019 if you plan to attend the workshop.

SUMMARY:ICOHAR\, International Conference on One Health Antimicrobial Resistance
DESCRIPTION:It is generally recognized that control and prevention of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) requires a holistic One Health approach involving specialists from different sectors. In line with this concept\, the 2nd ICOHAR aims to bring together representatives from all relevant sectors (e.g. public health\, human and veterinary medicine\, livestock production\, food safety and environmental sciences) to share research and education strategies for understanding and reducing the risks of AMR at the interphase between humans\, animals and the environment. The programme does not only focus on zoonotic transfer of AMR but also on the numerous AMR-related challenges shared by clinicians\, clinical microbiologists\, infectious disease specialists and researchers working in these sectors. \nTo view the program\, please click here.

SUMMARY:GARDP Mining Chemical Libraries for New Antibacterials
DESCRIPTION:Despite the promise of target-based drug discovery ushered in by the genomics era\, no mechanistically novel rationally designed antibiotic has reached clinically utility to address the threat of multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens. Phenotypic screening remains the primary source for new antibacterial compounds\, which mainly come from mining various chemical libraries. In this webinar\, Carl Balibar (Merck Research Laboratories) will discuss screen design\, target bias\, and hit-prioritization strategies to identify those entities with the greatest opportunity to be developed into the next new antibiotic. \nThe overall goal of this series of webinars is to provide\, for the non-clinical developer\, an understanding of the risks of development for various kinds of antibacterial products. In this third webinar\, we will discuss the development of antibacterial drug enhancer combinations and non-traditional products. \nPlease note\, this webinar has been rescheduled from April 4th to May 21st\, 2019. \nThe webinar will be held from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm CEST / 11:00 pm – 12:30 pm EDT. \nThe presentation will be followed by a Q&A session. \nRegister here for this live webinar.

SUMMARY:Global AMR R&D Hub “Increasing Investments for AMR R&D” Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Participants include Kevin Outterson\, Executive Director of CARB-X. \nThe Global AMR R&D Hub is pleased to announce a one-day workshop on “Increasing Investments\nfor AMR R&D”\, which will take place on Tuesday May 28 2019 in Geneva\, Switzerland. The event\nwill gather representatives from governments\, funders\, industry\, investors and other stakeholders\ninterested in the field of antimicrobial resistance. \nAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents an urgent major global health threat. Currently\, there is\nan insufficient number of treatments and tools in the AMR research and development (R&D)\npipeline to tackle this issue. Building on ongoing initiatives\, increasing investments across the One\nHealth spectrum is required. In particular\, more effort is needed in the animal and plant fields as\nwell as applicability in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). \nThis workshop aims to discuss investments and financing mechanisms for AMR R&D and provide\nrecommendations for funders and investors on how to address the vital issue of increasing\ninvestments in AMR R&D in a One Health context that also considers applicability in LMIC. \nPlease click here to learn more. \n
