CARB-X is seeking a talented individual to join our core team at Boston University in the role of pre-award funding Cycle Lead.
CARB-X is a young non-profit organization focused on accelerating the pre-clinical development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics to address antibiotic resistance. We coordinate with biopharmaceutical accelerators in the US and abroad to select projects for funding and mentor these projects towards clinical trials. We have begun to award more than $455 million for research over a five-year period beginning mid-2016. This is one of the largest public-private research partnerships in the world. CARB-X has made investments in 24 innovative therapeutic and diagnostic projects based on funding cycles running late 2016 and through 2017, and will continue to grow the pipeline through additional investment cycles.
The Cycle Lead will be a critical member of a core team of individuals working together to ensure CARB-X achieves its important healthcare-related mission to build a world leading investment portfolio of antibacterial projects. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the establishment and execution of the application Cycles for applicants interested in seeking an investment from CARB-X to further their programs in-line with the strategic goals established by CARB-X. The Cycle Lead will (1) take full ownership of allocated funding Cycles, with support from the Pre-Award Project Manager, from the preparatory stages through the three step application process, (2) lead the review process, including the face-to-face advisory board meeting, (3) play a significant leadership role in business due diligence activities led by the internal legal team, (4) develop proposals and materials for governance decisions regarding the projects following the advisory board, and (5) lead the negotiation of the project specific elements of the Sub-award Agreement including project scope, design, milestone criteria and budget for projects that receive a positive funding decision. Each such Cycle run by the Cycle Lead is likely to yield milestone-based awards that collectively total from $10-30 million in the Base and perhaps an equal amount in the Options involving in the initial stages up to 100 companies from many countries around the world.
As part of these efforts, the Cycle Lead will lead a sub-team of CARB-X/BU contributors and external expert advisors tasked with ensuring that the project is appropriately risk managed for the CARB-X investment, meets all compliance requirements and has a clear transition plan to the post-award team ensuring scientific and business support requirements to optimize project outcomes are highlighted and integrated into the plan. The Cycle Lead will also lead negotiations for agreements moving to Option stages for projects that successfully complete the Milestone Review process. The Cycle Lead will contribute to ongoing process improvements and in setting of requirements for future funding cycles. The Cycle Lead will be an ambassador for CARB-X to the external community – interested applicants, external experts and other interested parties.

- PhD in a relevant scientific field. MBA advantageous.
- At least 5-8 years of experience managing biotech projects and/or business development or technology transfer experience in the biotech or academic environment.
- Experience with the process of reviewing and processing grant applications an advantage.Experience with scientific Research and Development to combat infectious diseases, especially drug discovery phases through initial clinical trials, will be a significant advantage.
- Ability to lead teams of diversepartners who are distributed geographically and across various levels of seniority and disciplines (scientists, clinicians, business, legal, finance, etc).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
